Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - August 21, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta 32-THE LETHBRIOGE HERALD Wednesday, August 21, 1974 Ice threatens Arctic life line EDMONTON (CP) Ice along the central Arctic coastline is hampering efforts to deliver supplies to eight isolated communities before freeze-up, officials of the Northern Transportation Co. Ltd said Tuesday. The company said it has tons of freight backed up at Tuktoyaktuk, N W.T., because of the ice and has asked for the assistance of a United States Coast Guard icebreaker. There is no Canadian icebreaker available An estimated Eskimos and a handful of civil servants and businessmen are dependant on the sea lift for such things as fuel oil, gasoline, food, construction materials, and personal essentials The communities Paulatuk, Holman Island Coppermine, Bathurst Inlet, Bay Chimo, Cambridge Bay, Gjoa Haven and Spence Bay fear that the freeze-up, six to eight weeks off, could make deliveries by sea impossible. Two weeks of continuous wind have pushed ice from the Beaufort Sea into bays along the coast where one of the coolest summers on record is preventing it from melting. "The more it blows, the tighter it said Capt. Doug Thomas, the transportation firm's Arctic supervisor in Tuktoyaktuk. -ag ZE Back to School is A YEARNING TO LEARN THE BEGINNING OF A CAREER MAKING A DECISION MANY YEARS OF MUSICAL ENJOYMENT Make Your Decision Now< A SOUND INVESTMENT NOW BEING DEMONSTRATED AT From 1150 and up College Mall Phone 328-3694 YAMAHA SINCE 18N7 C 2CE 3TJC Ask about our GUARANTEED Suede and leather cleaning For Fashion that looks Newer Stays Fresher Wears Longer We Dry clean them the professional Way! Drilling display in Alberta OTTAWA (CP) A new petroleum drilling technique developed in the Soviet Union will be demonstrated in Alberta later this year, a spokesman for the federal energy department said Tuesday Five Soviet experts are travelling to Canada under an agreement signed between the two governments in 1971 to ex- change industrial technology and promote trade. Ralph Toombs. the depart- ment's senior adviser on oil and gas, said there have been several exchange trips since the agreement was signed. The Soviets will arrive in late fall with their drilling equipment and probably will stay for three or four months, Mr Toombs said. So far, all drilling has been scheduled for Alberta The department official said that under the Soviet technique, gas is pumped into a hole under "extremely high pressure" to break rock formations and sink an oil or gas well.
