Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - August 20, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta TUMday, August 20, 1974 THE LETHBR1DOE HERALD Lynne Van Luven Mazie mourns aloud demise of Saturday My friend Mazie was staring thoughtfully at a wall calendar when I visited her last Saturday she announced, "are just not what they used to be Who says they're I asked, somewhat confused by this thought- spoken-aloud 'I do said Mazie "I weekly mourn for the Saturdays of old, the days when the end of the week meant something and was observed with style So what are you saying9 That Saturdays don't corne on Saturday anymore' That they are now falling on Tuesdays, and nobody bothered to let me know9" Mazie briefly bared her teeth in a grimace, indicating my humour appeared so only to myself Oh come now she chided Let s not pretend we re too young to remember Remember the summer, when everyone knocked off gardening, or pickling beets, or haying, an hour or so early on Saturday afternoons' Then, after supper, everyone would get all spiffed up and go into town Yard goods I took up the thread of recollection, "and all the mothers would go to the Red and White or the Co-op or Green's Grocery or whatever, to buy the week's groceries or finger yard goods And the men would go to the garage or the machinery dealers, to buy a new part or to eye the newest combine, which they knew they could never afford that year, even if their crop came in at 80 bushels to the acre 'Right right Mazie's eyes had a far-away look, as she re lived those 'good ol days 'And then all the mothers would repair to the town restaurant for pie and coffee, even though they all knew they could do better themselves, at home in their own kitchens "Or I continued, "if they were daring enough, they'd go right up to the door of the beer parlor, which adjoined the cafe m the hotel lobby, and knock and make urgent gestures through the door And eventually, or just one beer later, fathers and husbands would join them, having concluded the business of the evening speculating on the weather, the crops and the next idiocies of both the federal and provincial governments Promenade Then all the parents would set out to find us, the kids Which wasn't hard to do since all the action, if YOU could call it that, was on main street We'd be nursing a soft drink and a bag of chips in one of the back booths in the cafe, or we d be out promenading the main thoroughfares in packs the girls The boys would be cruising up and down mam street, five or six to a car, squealing their wheels, slamming on their brakes and causing a shroud of dust to hang over downtown Or yelling unpnntables out the car's open windows, to attract the girls' attention We both sighed, somewhat self-consciously You can't go out Agriculture is the nation's and the world's only industry that absolutely affects every living person in some way grocery shopping I added, as Mazie began to draw up her list "Nobody in their right mind goes grocery shopping on a 'Tuesday1' BATTERY RENTAL?
