Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - August 20, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta 18 LETHBRIDGE HERALD Tuesday, August 20, 1974 It's ALL In... The Lethbridge Herald Magazine book enterprise grows REGINA (CP) Prairie Books, a small publishing firm committed to preserving the history of the region, is moving away from publishing one-time-only author. "After all, there are only so many Prairie says R. H. Macdonald, chairman of the Prairie Books committee for The Western Producer, a weekly farm magazine from which the publishing division grew. Many of the firm's published writers have written only one book, he said, usually about their experiences in the opening of the West. Mr. Macdonald said biography is the next type of work and he cites at least a dozen names of interest, including Msgr. Athol Murray of Notre Dame College in Saskatchewan. Prairie Books was an outgrowth of the Western Producer magazine section, which contained material too good to be discarded, Mr. Macdonald said. He said Prairie farmers during the Depression insisted the magazine record the story of the opening of the West and provide a platform for Western writers. The magazine published material in booklet form in the early 1950s and in 1954 produced its first book, To Find The Daily Bread, by Jacob Fast, which was about Mennonite settlers. In 1962 the division became Prairie Books and in 1967 it began publishing books from manuscripts rather than after the book was serialized in The Western Producer. In 10 years book sales have jumped to from The first year, about 200 manuscripts trickled into the office but now about are received in a year.
