On August 4, the Social Credit Government pledged itself to help thousands of Alberta families who have never been able to own a home, to have that home with a grant. These families will benefit right away- but so will everybody else! Widespread home ownership has a good effect on any community. The more people who own their homes, the more people share the tax load. Most important, however, is the dignity and pride that go with owning a piece of the community in which you live. More than a generation ago, the Homestead Act gave people a chance to own rather than rent. The results were good for the homesteaders and good for the community. Today, with rising prices and high rents, people again need help to own, rather than rent. To qualify, an applicant must earn less than a year, be a Canadian citizen and an Alberta resident for twelve months. In addition, this grant applies only to the purchase of a first home new or existing. Present home owners will find their property easier to sell because the grant will make it simpler for them to obtain their equity. VOTE SOCIAL CREDIT First time buyers will now be able to choose between new and existing homes. This grant will also reduce pressure for government-assisted rental housing. The money saved will cover the grants, thus helping to keep rents low without additional government expenditure. Home ownership is the best investment a family can have. This policy is part of a total plan to keep building Alberta-together Social Credit Inserted by the Alberta Social Credit League ;
