Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - August 19, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta Monday, August LETHBRIDGE Recording pirate gets fine LOS ANGELES (AP) A man described by federal authorities as the United States largest pirate of tape recordings was sentenced Friday to four years imprisonment and fined U.S. District Judge Irving Hill sentenced Richard Taxe, 33, for copyright infringement and mail fraud. Three of Taxe's employees also were sentenced Friday after being convicted of copyright infringement and conspiracy. They received fines and jail sentences of up to one year LOS ANGELES (AP) Comedian George Burns, recovering from open-heart surgery, was reported doing well Friday. A hospital spokesman said the 78 year old comedian is expected to be released in about a week. OPENING SOON! in CENTRE VILLAGE MALL LONDON (AP) Josephine Baker, recalling the furore she created when she appeared nude on the Paris stage years ago, says she was really "very respectable." "But if I came on stage as a young girl today, I am afraid I would not be sexy she said Friday. She is here for an engagement at the Palladium. Miss Baker, 68, said she has no plans to retire. "I would like to retire, but I simply cannot something inside keeps me she said. But in real life, she says, Sonny was a "watered-down Svengali" who ran their careers and lives with an iron fist: Except on TV, there was no back-talk. The jokes about Sonny's being short or Italian were his idea, she says, be- cause he wanted her to be witty. And liberated? He 'El Primo' kept Cher in style LOS ANGELES (AP) "Maybe I should spank her once in a Sonny Bono said of Cher. "That's the extent of my ill feelings. I've loved her for too long to have any other feel- ings." Sonny sat in the living room of a rented house in the Holly- wood Hills, a few miles from the mansion he once shared with Cher. He is preparing for a solo TV series. The Sonny Comedy Hour, this fall. His wife left him two years ago, but they continued to per- form on The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour as though nothing had happened. They still sang I Got You, Babe and The Beat Goes On-. They still traded witty put-downs and showed off their daughter. Chastity Finally, early this year, Cher refused to perform any more. The show was cancelled She has since learned he had her tied up until 1977 in a snare of legal contracts that gave him full control of her career. She is suing to break out of them, and Sonny has said she is free to work on her own for now "HE WAS 'EL PRIMO' In their 10-year-marnage, now coming to an end in di- vorce court, Sonny ran things Life was on a grand houses, big cars, furs, dia- monds. Even when Sonny was nearly broke He called himself "El Primo He was the boss. She was his "Prima Donna." Cher felt her personal free- dom was being smothered. Sonny said "If I mistreated her I did it in style. She's in good shape Every woman should be mistreated in that way I don't think Cher would say I mistreated her." He was asked if he considered himself a male chauvinist, as Cher called him. "What's a male chauvinist? I don't know what that means. "If you're referring to me being director of our careers and head of the household, I was I believe in that to this day. It's my old Italian up- bringing." But he said he didn't domi- nate Cher "I think if you love someone enough, and she loves you enough, I don't think you can dominate someone Cher's too bright to be dominated-." Sonny, who has a girl-friend, Connie Foreman, said he has no plans to remarry when the divorce is final. "My plans are to go to work. I don't feel any need now to re- marrv wouldn't let her go to the mov- ies or learn tennis because it would take her out of the house, she says. Cher talked candidly in an interview about life with her estranged husband, picturing him as Professor Higgins to her Eliza Doohttle, shaping her into his own image of My Fair Lady. Finally, she said, she rebel- led "I didn't object to him run- ning she said. "He was better at it than I was But I think people, in- cluding women, should have more freedom about how your life is run than just saying yes The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour, top-rated for three years, fell apart with the 10- year marriage. They continued the show for two years after they separated. IN DIVORCE COURT Sonny filed suit for separation Feb. 19, 1974 She countered with a suit for dissolution of the marriage. A property settlement and custody of their five-year-old blonde daughter, Chastity, is being negotiated in divorce court Sonny bounced back with a new ABC variety show begin- ning this fall Cher will do a solo special for CBS.
