Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - August 19, 1970, Lethbridge, Alberta Wednesday, August 19, 1970 THE IETH6RIDGE HERALD 25 Mariner Flights Seen Forerunner Of Grand Tours Of The Planets PASADENA, Calif. (AP) A U.S. Mariner spacecraft equipped wilh television cameras will fly by Venus and Mercury in 1974 in what the i o n 's scientific co-ordlnator calls a forerunner of grand tours of the planets. Grand Tours, proposed for the end of tin's decade, would gravitational force of the planets to swing a spacecraft some three billion miles to the edge of the solar system. The Mariner to be launched in the fall of 1973 will employ the gravity of Venus, to reach Mercury, nearest planet to the sun and in an orbit SO to 136 million miles from earth. Without tills boost, said Dr. James A. Dunne, "it would take half again as much energy it beyond the capabilities of our launch vehicle. Little is known about Mercury which is smaller by one-third than Venus and earth. The Soviet Union sent its seventh unmanned spacecraft toward Venus Monday, but gave few details. It claims that three of its previous probes made landings on the hot planet. WOULD COST-SID MILLION Dunne, 36, a geologist at the U.S. Space Agency's jet propulsion laboratory here, says space flights to such distant planets as Mercury are worth the expenditure in this case don't know what it looks like; this will be our first real glimpse. Is it heavily cratercd or swept clean, or rugged with mountains? We just don't know. There is no agreement yet Mercury even lias an atmosphere." WILL EXAMINE DATA Dunne's team of 45 scientists from 21 universities will examine data including what he hopes will be hundreds of pictures of Mercury, some from as close as 625 miles, and clearer than telescopic view of the moon. Previous Mariner missions dispelled a number of myths about Mars but left open a number of mysteries about Venus. Mariners VI and VII televised 300 photos of Mars 60 million miles away last year, and that telescopes had detected for centuries were nowhere to be seen from than miles up. In Mariner V swept by Venus within miles a day after the Soviets parachuted a space capsule on the planet's surface. Neither carried cameras because there was little hope at the time that the murky atmosphere could be penetrated.
