Skouras, 711, one of Lhe last ot Hollywood's old-style movie magnates, died at his home here of a heart attack. The son of a sheepherder, the Greek immigranL parlayed a nickelodeon Ihealre into the presidency of the 20th Century- Fox. After retiring as honorary board chairman of Fox in Skonras devoted himself lo his shipping interests as chairman of ilie PrudenLial-Grace Lines. Skouras was born in Skoura- hoi'ian, Greece, in The shepherd boy studied for the priesthood, but he and his broth- ers, Charles and George, were eager lo seek their fortunes in America. Charles, the oldest brother, came to the United States in 1007 and brought his brothers over in 1910. The three lived in Si. Louis, where young Spyros worked as a hotel busboy. BUY NICKELODEON In 1914, Lhe brothers bought a nickelodeon theatre that was in financial trouble. They pros- pered and built a string of 37 theatres in S't. Louis, Kansas City and Indianapolis. After Warner Brothers bought the chain, the brothers went their separate ways in the film industry. In 1932, Spyros look over the Fox Metropolitan Thea- tres in New York. lie moved up lo llic presi- dency o[ the parent company in 1M2 for a 20-year reign as chief of Ihe sludio, commanding a salary of a year. Skouras was particularly proud of having produced the firsl Chemascope movie, The Robe, in ]fln2. He resigned as president in 1902. The other Skeuras brothers j died several years ago.
