"I have learned not to con- fuse power with says Mr. Pearson at the out- set of his personal philosophiz- ing on the uses and abuses of political power, "Power doesn't only at times corrupt; it diminishes a person." INTENSE PRESSURES In commenting on the inade- quacy of human leadership in approaching matters of criti- cal concern to society, Mr. Pearson expresses deep concern about the intense pressu res brought to bear on today's leaders pressures of a kind not experienced in past gen- erations. "I've never been unduly im- pressed with pomp and circum- he continues 'Tve seen more common sense ex- pressed around the table in a farm house than I have around the table in the United Nations committ e e room. If you could only get this kind of popular wisdom and common sense channeled into the agencies of political deci- sion." During the course of the 30- minute program, Mr. Pearson speaks from the emotional depths of personal experience as he looks back on power, and its relationship to the individual, to Parliament, democracy, the news media, and the general public. The Police Story, CBC TV's Summer Movis (August 28 at 8 p.m.) is based upon Wambaugh's writ- ing. The author of "The New Centurions" and "The Blue Knight" is a hard-hitting, no- nonsense guy with an exper- ienced feel for drama and sus- pense. The Police Story re- flects that feel. Vic Morrow stars as Police Officer Joe La Frieda, mem- ber of a special detail, design- ed to root out dangerous elu- sive criminals, and Chuck Connors plays "Slow a character who has made his living from crime for twenty years. Joe wants Slow Boy bad. But his aggressive method of nailing the criminal during an attempt- ed holdup almost proves disas- trous for everyone involved, and the merits of this particu- lar breed of cop are seriously considered. Wambaugh knows the police and the criminals from person- al experience, and E, Jack Neuman, who wrote the tele- play from the author's mater- ial, has managed to keep that personal touch throughout the show.
