They report that heavy drinkers and smokers might be able to use these "protective factors" to prevent heart disease and other side effects of smoking and drinking. Vitamin C is one of the vitamins, along with thiamme, known as B-l. The third substance is cysteine, a common compound found in most high-protein foods. The work was done at the Coatesville, Pa., Veterans Ad- ministration Hospital. The findings, plus other recent research on the role of these compounds, may offer "a means of protection against chronic body insult" from drinking and smoking, the investigators said. But Dr Herbert Spnnce, chief researcher on the team and associate professor of psychiatry and pharmacology at Philadelphia's Jefferson Medical College, added: "I don't want to go on record saying that once you've taken some Vitamin C and B-l to drink and smoke all you want and it isn't going to hurt you I can't do that for one second. "I can say that this combination offered rats 100-percent protection against lethal doses of acetaldehyde, the first step in the body's metabolism of alcohol and a substance that has been implicated in heart disease." Spnnce said, however, that more research is needed before it can be flatly stated that the vitamin-cysteine combination will protect humans against the harmful effects of smoke and drink. "I generally think the pubic should be informed of this, even though the work was done with Sprince said.
