Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - August 14, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta 44 THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD Wednesday, August 14, 1974 No impeachment vote likely WASHINGTON (AP) The House oi Representatives ap- parentlv will take no action on the House judiciary com- mittee s impeachment report except to make it widely avail- able to the public Since Richard Nixon s resignation as president ended the impeachment process some ke> members have been explor ing the possibility ot having the House vote on acceptance of the report setting out evidence and reasons for the com nuttee s recommendation of three impeachment articles However strong resistance developed to what critics de- scribed as an indirect vote on impeachment A consenus is developing that the House should limit its action to authoriz- ing printing of a large number of separate copies of the report perhaps 50 000 or printing it in full in the Congressional Record, or both Representative Robert McClorv of Illinois second- ranking Republican on the committee said in an interview he would favor a large printing but would oppose anv move for a tormal vote on acceptance I think the Republicans (on the committee) will stand idlv against any formal House action on the report he said A Democrat committee member Representative Robert Dnnan of Massachusetts said it would be impractical to seek a vote of acceptance now that Nixon s resignation has made actual impeachment moot Dnnan an early and strong advocate of impeachment said that the House rules committee s the receive the report and consider impeach- ment procedures gives the document some status of accep tance and this might be bolstered by a House vote to publish it widelv A judiciary committee source said committee chairman Peter Rodmo (Dem N J now opposes any backdoor vote on impeachment Final drafting of the document meanwhile, has been de- laved Home off the range.
