Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - August 14, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta 42 THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD Wednesday, August 14, 1974 What can you make with cans? A tin-can and stucco house, that's what. By CHARLES E. DOLE Christian Science Monitor What can you do with discarded 12-ounce tin cans' You can build a house That's what architect Michael E Reynolds did and he has a local lawyer liv- ing in it Stephen I Natelson moved in last October Located six miles outside of Taos, N M the most obvious feature is not the cans but the fact that the house is round You can't see a can anywhere because the house is stuccoed on the outside and plastered on the inside Yet about scrap cans were used on the outside structural walls and another on the inside walls. Reynolds says his house helps clean up the waste cans in Taos, provides an alter- nate building material in these days of scarce materials, and cuts building costs Also, unskilled local labor can help in the construction Mr Reynolds' brother, also an architect, is building a can house in Jeffer- sonville, Ind So far the Taos architect has come up with two canned-wall concepts a unit system used in the Natelson house, plus a 12-inch-wide frame system in which the Irame is filled with old cans and bottles instead of baling the cans in blocklike form In the unit system, each unit is made up of eight cans and tied with baling wire Four cans have to be in good condition, two are flattened, and another two are semiflat "The unit is structurally sound, weatherproof, and well-insulated because of a foil-reflecting shield incorporated in its adds Mr Reynolds The can unit has withheld extensive testing by the architectural and engineer- ing departments of the University of Cin- cinnati from which Mr Reynolds received an architectural degree in 1969 The university of New Mexico now is lunning tests on the unit technique The preliminary opinion is that it is a good in- sulator because there are several layers of metal in addition to three major air spaces Total cost, exclusive of land, figures out to to a square foot, consideraly un- der the base cost of any other building system available The retail price of concrete block is 30 to 40 cents apiece while can units can be manufactured for five cents and manually I assembled for perhaps 10 cents each Each can unit weighs less than half a pound A concrete block, by contrast, weighs about 50 pounds In addition, skill- ed workers are required to lay and line up the blocks An unskilled worker can easily and quickly lay the can units What Mr Reynolds has done is create a competitive building block from a waste product and further reduced costs through the wide use of unskilled labor Who wants to live in a house of cans9 Mr Natelson does and he's paid about 000 for it abovo the land. The attorney, who arrived in Taos about four years ago on a skiing trip and stayed, sees a growing market for the concept and he's teamed up with architect Reynolds in pursuit of it PRICES EFFECTIVE to Saturday closing, August 17th.
