Prim? Minister Vorster says his scientists have found a unique process for making enriched uranium, a critical element in nuclea power. Until Vorster's statement, the ability to enrich uranium and thereby obtain the ingredients for atomic weapons or atom power plants was believed lim- ited tt the United States, Brit- ain, France, Soviet Union and Communist China. The discovery frees South Af- rica from any threat that its nu- clear growth can be blocked by outsiders. And there apparently would be nothing to stop other medium-sized and small coun- tries from getting on the band- wagon to build secretly atomic weapons. Vorslcr hinted secret new method that I is presently developed to the was state where it is estimated that under South African conditions, atoms which form Ihu bulk of natural uranium. Sines they cannot be sepa- rated by chemical process, U.S. scientists take advantage of the lighter weight of Uranium-Jin atoms. Because of the enormous costs of uranium en- richment, only the United States of America, the United King- dom and France in the Western world have such plants. A South Af- rican uranium specialist ques- tioned w nether the method would prove commercially fea- sible; South Africa is the Western wurld's third-largest uranium producer after the United States and Canada. The ability to en- rich this ready supply clearly j could boost tbe country into the ranks of major nuclear powers. i Vorster said: "Our sole objec- tive in the further development and application of the process is to promote the peaceful applica- I tion of nuclear energy. Only I then call it be to our benefit and to the benefit of mankind." South Africa has not yet signed the nuclear non-prolifer- ation agreement. But it indi- cated it plans to do so.
