CORNER 3rd AVENUE, 3rd STREET SOUTH PHONE 327-2805 West Crops Need Rain OTTAWA (CP) Recent hot, dry weather is maturing crops rapidly throughout the Prairie provinces, but drought is caus- ing premature ripening in some districts, the Dominion Bureau of Statistics reported Wednes- day in its telegraphic report on Prairie crop conditions. j Rain is needed over most of j Manitoba and parts of Saskat- chewan and Alberta, where ad- ditional moisture is required for the grain to fill fully. In Alberta, moisture supplies are generally adequate to carry the crop through, DBS reported. The survey was the ninth hi a series of 11 telegraphic reports filed in 1970 by government cor- respondents, private crop ob- servers and grain men. The summary of crop condi- lions by province: MANITOBA Throughout Manitoba all crops are advancing rapidly due to the hot dry weather prevail- ing over the province. Barley crops in light soils are ripening prematurely. Special crops look good to date. Swathing of rye in general and swathing of early barley has just started. j Rye is yielding 20 to 25 bushels an acre. Pea crops are late and tile second cut of hay is j below average. Aphid infestations are serious on some crops and barley crops have been sprayed. SASKATCHEWAN Crops remain good to excel- lent although rain is needed. Hot, dry weather brought on rapid maturity and put stress on crops on lighter soil, causing drought damage in several areas. The south-central part of the province was especially hard hit by dryness. Elsewhere, development Is about one week later than nor- mal although heading of cereal crops now is practically com- plete. Flax and rapeseed are prog- ressing rapidly with 73 per cent of the flax and 84 per cent of the rapeseed in the pod stage. Some swathing of rapeseed and barley was reported and some of the rye has been threshed. Haying is progressing and work should be finished in another week. Forage crops are good. ALBERTA i Recent hot weather through j nost of Alberta is ripening j crops rapidly. Moisutre condi- j ions are adequate in most areas and it is expected that the >resent moisutre supply will be sufficient to carry crops through o maturity. Excellent yields are in pros- )ect, provided the present fa 'orable weather continues until larvest. Scattered outbreaks of grass- noppers have been reported in southern Alberta. Excessive noisture conditions in the north eastern part of the province caused by heavy July rains re- sulted in some flooding of fields md lodging of some crops has Become a problem in these areas. Harvesting of early barley )ats, rapeseed, winter whea; and fall rye is under way in the outh. and swathing of earlj jarley has started in centra ireas. In the Peace River district, escue combining is nearing completion and swathing oi rome and early barley is well inder way. The drought conditions on inch of the Prairies are re- ected in precipitation figures or the week ended Aug. JO. Fanitoba received an average f .01 inches with many points eporting no rainfall. Saskatche- received an average of .32 inches and Alberta .14 inches. Manitobars mean temperature or the week was 70.3 degrees; askatchewan 70 degrees; and Iberta degrees.
