HERALD 21 Plane Pirate Foiled Again SAIGON (AP) An escaped United States soldier tried for the second time to hijack a plane In South Vietnam Tues- day, but was foiled in a struggle in which one crew member was seriously wounded, the U.S. Air Force said. A spokesman said the soldier, Pte. George Hardin, 20, of St. Louis, Mo., boarded a big U.S. Air Force C-141 jet cargo plane at Bien Hoa air base near Sai- gon and threatened the crew with an M-16 rifle. U.S. authorities said Hardin bad escaped Sunday from a Sai- gon hospital where he had bee taken to see a Korean flight e gineer injured during Hardin July 22 attempt to hijack an Air Vietnam plane at Saigon's Ta Son Nhut airport. In Tuesday's attempt, Hard demanded that he be taken Da Nang, but the plane's ere was ordered by air base officer to move the big four-engine aircraft away from the buildin to reduce the danger. While the plane was bein moved, the spokesman said, tl navigator grabbed the rifle an the flight engineer subdued1 H din. Jesuit Priest Under Arrest WASHINGTON (AP) The FBI announced Tuesday its agents have arrested Rev. Dan- iel Berrigan, a Jesuit priest who has evaded authorities since April 9 when he was sent- enced to tlirec years in prison for destroying draft files in Ca- tonsvUle, Md. FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover said Berrigan, 49, was arrested at a summer home on Block Is land, R.I. Berrigan has been sought as fugitive since he failed to sur render after his conviction. Eight other persons, includin his brother, Rev. Philip Berr gan, were charged in the inc dent. Philip Berrigan current is serving a prison sentence.. To Close Down Divorce Mills MEXICO CITY (AP) Presi- dent Gustavo Diaz Crdaz plans to close dmvn the quickie di- vorce mills for foreigners along the Mexican border. He thinks they "contradict the respect the people of Mexico have for the family as an the in- terior ministry reported today. The divorce law now requires a three-month waiting period for Mexican nationals and for- eign legal residents who file for an uncontested divorce. But for eigners can obtain uncontestec annulments or divorces i day. The ministry said Diaz Orda is asking Congress to amend th law so that the foreigners ar able to get Mexican divorces o annulments are those with certi ficates of legal residence from the interior ministry. The gov eminent party's overwhelmin majority .in Congress assure approval of the amendment. U.S., Japan Talk Army Bases TOKYO (Reuters) The United States and Japan are working on methods for joint use of American military bases in Japan, official U.S. sources said tonight. Military experts of both coun- tries presented their first pro- posals at a recent Washington conference. Concrete negotia- tions probably will be held in Tokyo at some future date, the sources said. The Nixon administration faced with the need to cut def ence spending, is studying plans to reduce part of the U.S. force in Japan while grac ually closing out many of the more than 100 military there. Canadians Injured In Japan KYOTO, Japan (AP) Twelve Canadian tourists, mostly from Montreal, and two Japanese were of the Canadians their tour bus swerved off a road today to avoid a child and tumbled into a rice paddy in Kyoto, western Japan. Police said Lawrence W. Bell, 65, and Georgina Crowe, 59, suf- fered serious head Injuries which would require them to re- main in hospital two or three weeks. Police said the other Oanadl ans and the Japanese, a tour guide and a bus conductor, suf Eered minor cuts and bruises. The Canadians were members of a Canadian National tion Association .tour group They arrived in Tokyo Aug. for a tour which included, a visil to Expo '70 in Osaka. Navy Admits Dumping Canisters LONDON (Routers) The Royal Navy admitted Tuesday night responsibility for canisters of toxic chemicals washed ashore on the Isle of Wight off the south coast of England and said the canisters were dumped last month. A navy spokesman said the canisters of ferric chloride were part of a consignment dumped in the solent, a narrow stretch of water between the Isle of Wight and the English main- land. All navy dumping in the area has been stopped and an in- quiry is being held, the spokes- man said. The canisters have been found on beaches on the island's north coast during the last wo days.
