Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - August 8, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta LETHBRIDGE August Reactions vary on lifting of beef ban By THE CANADIAN PRESS The tederal government's decision to lift a four-month ban on imports of United States beef has prompted varied reac- tions on both sides of the border. Chris Mills, secretary of the Canadian Cattlemen's Associ- ation said in Edmonton the removal of the ban, coupled with a worldwide surplus of beef could seriously affect prices paid to Canadian producers this fall But Jack Dampsy. public relations manager for Canada Packers predicted that a quota system set by the Canadian government will prevent a sharp drop in prices Minister Eugene Wnelan offered no predic- tion> ot the effect on beef prices Last Ottawa closed the border to U.S beet demanding that beef and cattle imports be certified free ol the growth hormone diethystilbestrol linked with cancer in some laboratory experiments The ban continued for four months, with Washington refus ing to comph with the Canadian demand that beef be certi lied bv government inspectors as free of DES. Quota imposed hen the I" S finally agreed to certify beef, the ban was lifted, but a quota system was imposed to slow imports Mike Ellis, a spokesman for the agriculture department ir Ottawa said the department staff is ready to handle U S beet at time However. Clavton Yeutter, US assistant secretary ol agriculture, said it will be at least 30 days before American meat is in Canadian stores His department would hold seminars for producers whc ish to ship cattle to Canada Farms would also be inspected b> a veterinarian to ensure DES was not being used and both dressed meat and live cattle would be inspected by American and Canadian officials at the border C anadian producers they are not sure if quotas and >tabihzation prices set up by the federal government will control the eitect of the imports The government is to guarantee a 45 4-cents-a-pound price tor beet and pay the difference if the price drops below this Cattlemen in favor Mr Mills said the amount is below the break-even price, but the cattlemen's association favors it. It doesn't interfere with the market as much as a tloor price which tends to distort the market because it guarantees a price to each producer no matter how good a manager he is or how good his product is." he said However. Walter Miller, vice-president of the National Farmers Union, said that the stabilization figure is below a 52-cent-per-pound guarantee price suggested by Mr Whelan last March Mr Miller also said the only way to ensure DES-treated meat does not enter Canada is with a complete ban He said the tederal government lifted the ban because ot strong lobbies trom groups more concerned with profit than human health He said the iederal government should establish a national meat authority to control the industry and protect both the producer and consumer. Mr Mills said the cattlemen are also unhappy with the certification program C J EQUIPMENT RENTALS 1410-2ndAve. S.
