His job is interesting but dangerous and he admits he is often frightened when he and his cameraman move into sniper-infested battle sites to shoot film on happenings in Vietnam and Cambodia. Cunningham has been stationed in Hong Kong for two years. He is seen above recording a report for television while standing near some gun carriers. 'Scared All The Time' CBC's Far East correspondent, Bill Cunningham, once confessed he was "scared all the time" during his first lengthy visit to Vietnam two years ago. Gunfire greeted him the moment he stepped off the plane and upon arrival in Saigon he saw tracer bullets arcing through the air. At one point during the large-scale Viet Cong attack on Saigon he recalled: "Viet Cong snipers had us in their gunsights and could have killed us anytime." Since then he has covered the war front in Vietnam, Korea and Cambodia. He is still afraid, but he keeps on going. Stationed in Hong Kong, Bill Cunningham not only goes out with a cameraman to shoot film for CBC television news, but also writes the commentary and does separate voice reports for CBC Radio news. He and his cameraman, plus a girl to staff the office, make up the CBC's Hong Kong bureau. Born in Moncton, N.B., Bill Cunningham has been a newsman for 23 of his 38 years. He began as a reporter and news editor on Moncton radio stations in 1948 and in 1951, joined The Canadian Press in Toronto. He" later moved to Edmonton with CP. In 1954, he started work as a radio news reporter for the CBC in Vancouver, and in i960 earned himself a Western Canada Press Award for a television report on unemployment in Vancouver. The same year he moved to the CBC's Montreal newsroom to cover Quebec affairs. Cunningham transferred to Toronto in 1961 as a staff editor of CBC-TV's weekly Newsmagazine and by 1964 was producer of the series. During 1966-67 he was executive producer of the CBC-TV National News. Previous to his Hong Kong assignment, Cunningham had been to Vietnam and Japan to cover stories. He also attended special classes in East Asian studies at Harvard, Toronto and Montreal to prepare himself. During that time he covered the Arab-Israeli war and produced a critically-acclaimed cne-hour film report called Strike Zion. Last season, Cunningham prepared and appeared in a one-hour color docu- mentary for CBC-TV's Thurs- fair and Cunningham's visit day Night series titled A was the first to Communist Glimpse of China. It was shot China by a Canadian TV news- during the annual Peking trade man in several years.
