Lethbridge Herald (Newspaper) - August 6, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta 12 - THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD - Tuesday, August 6, 1974 Suffield weather chamber aids cattle respiratory research By RIC SWIHART, Herald Staff Writer A special machine built at the Defence Research Establishment in Suffield is being used to determine the part temperature and humidity plays in calves' susceptibility to respiratory disease. Vulcan 485-2211 Animal Diseases Research Institute in Lethbridge, is in charge of the research project. Calf losses due to death are higher in the fall than at other times of the year and Dr. Jericho believes these losses are due to stresses on the young cattle. Some of the stresses are temperature and humidity, weaning from the mothers and transportation. "This worjt is designed to determine strictly the temperature and humidity factors," he said. The equipment used in the project is unique in North America, said Dr. Jericho. And the principle behind this research has never been followed up before either. Bacteria The unit constructed by the defence research staff allows Dr. Jericho io introduce a specific bacteria or virus to the calves under controlled conditions. The temperature and humidity is controlled in a special weather chamber, a large stainless steel room equipped like a large refrigerator. The calves, for the test are selected from a herd owned by the research institute when they are 250 to 300 pounds. The calves are left in the chamber for five days to allow them to become accustomed to their new environment. When Dr. Jeri-cho selects the temperature and humidity he wants to test, the animals are locked in the chamber for nine days. During this time, the calves are subjected to bacteria by aerosol to induce a type of pneumonia. In the case now being studied, the four calves were subjected to pasturella bacteria for five minutes each. The application of the bacteria is the job of the special machine developed by the staff at Suffield. Nose mask The machine creates an aerosol spray. This spray is introduced to the calves through a tube attached to a nose mask on the animal. The bacteria or virus which aren't inhaled by the calf is recirculated through the machine, returning to the special sealed container to prevent contamination of the environment. Five days after subjecting the calves to the bacteria, they are slaughtered and detailed pathological and bacteriological tests are performed. Virus test ... Dr. Klaus Jericho.
