Difficult, says Roger Vaclim, husband of Jane Fonda. The matter came up as tire French director was discussing Ills first American film, Pretty .Maids All in a Row. made a career of directing films about headstrong young women, notably those portrayed by his wives. Brigitte Bardot and Miss Fonda. Now, for the first lime, his film is centred on a man, Rock Hudson. Vadim said: "It is true that all my films have been about women, al- though there have been impor- tant parts for men in them. I don't know how that happened, except that artists do have cer- tain obsessions that seem to be exemplified in their work. I was instinctively attracted to the female story. "And yet I prefer the com- pany of men. .f like the male humor, the honest give-and-take with men. If I had to choose three persons with whom to make a round-the-world cruise, they would all be male. "The trouble with female companionship is this: If a woman is intellectual, she be- gins to compete with the man and becomes aggressive. If she is not intellectual, she is Joring to be with. "That is man's fate: lie is doemed to be aggressed or bored." And what about life Woman Mayor NAIROBI, Kenya (Reuters) President Jomo Kenyatta's daughter was elected Nairobi's first woman mayor Tuesday. A city councillor, Margaret Ken- yatta has been acting mayor of Nairobi since January. She was the only candidate proposed in the voting. with ,lanc? She has lately been involved in causes beyond counting, showing up at rallies, demonstrations and marches all over the land. Vadim responded with start- ling frankness: j "So far we have not discussed j divorce, but I must admit it is not a very satisfactory arrange- ment. Jane comes home a few j days each month to visit me I and our daughter and then she is off again. Now she is starling a picture in New York, and I will he malting one here. "We are very good friends, but we are not living the way that married people are sup- posed to live. "It is difficult enough to live with an actress actresses are necessarily very self-centred. But if the actress is also ori- ented toward politics, it can be- come very difficult. When she talks only about politics all the time, there is no time to estab- lish feelings." Miss Fonda declines to dis- cuss her personal life. Pretty Maids is Vadim's first movie since Jane's Barbarella, almost three years ago, and he is eager for a return to action.
