Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - August 2, 1973, Lethbridge, Alberta 8 THE HTHBRIDGB HERALD 1973 Trudeau gets message Canadians like monarchy By VICTOR MACKIE Herald Ottawa Bureau OTTAWA Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth taking a leaf from the politicians' book did some in Ot- tawa during her visit to the capital. Seldom far from her side and walking slightly behind was Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. A late convert to the mon- archial system the prime minis- ter saw the light after the Octo- ber election. Up to that time he had shrugged and told more than one questioner that he had no strong feelings either way. Not long after he had become a well known political figure across the country he declined to participate in a vote on a resolution at a Quebec Liberal convention. It sought the aboli- tion of the monarchy in Canada. Mr. Trudeau explained to news- men that he was not interested in the issue as he held no brief for the monarchy nor was he strongly opposed to it. That attitude altered during his years in office and in the crucible of the general election campaign. Mr. Trudeau has de- clared since October that he learned several lessons from the outcome of that vote. One of them apparently was that many Canadians care about the mon- archy and want to sea it pre- ignored. Hence came the highly un- usual situation of two royal vis- its to Canada this summer. The Queen and Prince Philip had undertaken to make a royal tour in Canada from Prince Ed- ward Island to the Calgary Stampede with stops in be- tween. That tour took place a month ago. The request from the Cana- dian governments that the royjs couple return to Canada and preside at the formal opening of the Commonwealth Heads of Government conference in Ot- early In report- edly raised some eyebrows in London official circles. Two royal visits in such a short space of After some hesitancy it was finally confirmed that indeed the Queen would be coming to Canada for a second visit. On both occasions she visited the country as Queen of Canada and during the second visit she carried out her constitutional responsibilites for Canada as host to the Commonwealth Con- ference. It was a precedent-shattering coup for the prime minister to persuade The Queen to come to Canada twice in such a short period. His long time opponent and sharp critic John Diefenba- former prime minister and an ardent champion of the mon- has taken delight in not- ing the of Mr. Trudeau to the rolt tl royal- ist.
