THE IETHBRIDGE HERALD Auguil 1973 Liberals kicking themselves for holding western conference OTTAWA Leading Liberals in the cabinet and the party are still trying to figure out how they got euchred into holding a conference with the four west- ern premiers. Hindsight is al- ways so much more knowl- edgeable than foresight that they now realize there was no way the federal Liberal Prime Minister Trudeau could outshine the four rising young lights in the west who now lead the proincial governments. Carried live on national tele- vision the opening day was for tha federal government. That is the sum- mation of the boys who have been examining the results of the meetings and wondering why oh why they agreed to a format where the three New Democratic Party and one Progressive Con- servative party premiers shared the limelight with Mr. Trudeau and came away from the meetings with their stock enhanced. Minister Pearson used a federal provincial con- ference to build up Trudeau. He let his then justice minister step into the limelight and get na- tional television coverage so that it established him as a na- tional political personality. Now we have done just the same for these four particu- larly Premier one senior member of the cabinet said summing up his and Liberals' reactions. Any build-up for Lougheed the Grits. They see in the very capable young politician who now heads A Tory adminis- tration in Alberta a possible strong threat to the Liberal party in tire federal field in the future. Liberals in the past have always worked on the basis of destroying such threats before they really began to certainly the Liberal gov- ernment was reluctant .to give siioh possible threats a build-up. A recent trio to the west coast when the Liberals and NDP were having their conler- ences in Vancouver made it quite clear to this western-born correspondent and others who went that Ottawa not liked in British Columbia. The same thing applies to the other three provinces. i A strong antagonism has de- j veloped across the the 1 foothills and the to- wards the federal government. This was reflected in the results of the October general election. Some Liberals attribute it to a natural backlash that developed out of the constant clamour to help Quebec that has been hoard on capital hill during the past decade and a half. West- erners have become obviously fed up with the question does Quebec At first they enthusiastically joined in the national to do somethng to make Quebec happy within confederation. But after ten years they are tired of trying to make Quebec happy and they would like to get some attention for Che west. In a nutshell they are saying know what we and we'ne going to tell That was the message loud and clear they had for the prime minis- is the way Liberals back in Ottawa are now reading the results of the conference on economic objectives. 31-07-73 09.06ped The big question agitating Liberals in Is whether the move has come too late to rehabilitate Mr. Trudeau's sag- ging popularity in that part of the country. The pessimistic In the party see no hope of restor- ing Mr. Trudeau's prestige. Tlie optimistic believe it can be done if there is no election until the spring or fall of 1974.
