Despite what one has been conditioned to believe, boxing ranks among the safest contact sports scheduled to be on display during the Games. Almost every one of the 56 Canadian. Amateur Boxing Association rules and their numerous sub- rules are geared toward one aspect safety. From padded ring flooring and 10 02. gloves to weight and age divisions and mandatory doctor's examinations prior to every bout, amateur boxing is extremely safety- oriented. Every boxer entering the ring must wear CABA approved protective headgear, a mouthpiece, an abdominal athletic support and fitted cup. He must pass a stringent medical examination. The medical checkup suggested by the CABA lists 16 categories the examining doctor should 'observe. Dr. Brian Inglis, examining doctor at the recent Claresholm Mini- Games boxing card and also attending ringside physician, demonstrated the thoroughness and necessity of the pre-fight tests when he discovered a boy unfit to box. "The lad had an abdominal abnormality. I sent a note to his parents, referring him to his family he said. "While it wasn't that serious an incident, the problem increased the boy's chances of aggravating the condition in a bout. "It was a precautionary measure in not allowing him to box, even though the chances were slim he would further injure himself." Dr. Inglis shared the same opinion as Lethbridge general practitioner Dr. Calvin Stewart in saying that amateur boxing is quite a safe sport, especially in the way it is handled today. "I was very impressed with the concern in the handling of the young boxers by the referees and in particular by their Dr. Stewart said about a boxing card he presided over in Lethbridge.
