Part expenses for injured hoteiman surges WASHINGTON (AP) The 1S72 U.S. Lrade deficit surged in March to a record three-month figure of billion, the com- merce department said here. The department said the million deficit in trade ac- counts in M a r c h was slightly smaller than Ihe February red- ink figure, but for January, February March combined, the deficit exceeded the pre- vious largest quarterly deficit by about million. It was during the last three montlis of 1971 that the pre- ious largest quarterly deficit was recorded. A trade deficit occurs when the value of foreign goods brought into the country ex- ceeds the v a 11! e of American goods taken out. Government officials say this is bad because it increases the nation's balance of payments deficit and puts pressure on the stability of the dollar. But it also means that consumers are not letting up in their demand for imported items. The deficit was so bad last year that President Nixon launched a new economic policy and suspended the U.S. pledge to convert dollars into gold.
