Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - April 28, 1970, Lethbridge, Alberta lutsdoy, April 21, 1970 THE LETHBKIDGE HIUID 13 Ann Landers DEAR ANN LANDKRS: A niece (by marriage) moved to this city recently. We are nearly the wae age. (Three rears difference.) She calls DM Ami Harriet 1 wish she would drop the aunt. Because of the ctee- neu in our age people keep asking me to explain the rela- tionship. I am sick of going into it. (She is tie daughter of my deceased husband's sister and I can't that it's worth explaining.) I've asked her twice to call me Harriet but she is nearly M and doesn't hear well What thould 1 DEAR EDNA: Talk louder. DEAR ANN LANDERS: Parents keep uying, "I wish kids would listen to Ann Landers." Well, here's a. letter from a farmer kid who wishes the parents mild listen to Ann Landers..Especially when you tell them, "Be firm and con- sistent, but don't beat on your children and expect them to blindly follow your advice. If you don't approve of the boy your daughter is going with, let her know it, but don't knock the guy too hard for too long or she might hang on just to prove she has a mind of her own." When I was 18 I went with a guy-my folk! hated. The more they talked against Km, the more determined I was to keep htm. Instead of breaking n. up, my parents brought ui closer together. Too close. When'I announced I m four months pregnant they bad to let get married. It the saddest wedding on record. Everybody, cried. I knew he didn't want to marry me and I didn't want to marry him. But I had to prove to my folks I could run my own life. Well, I ran it all right-straight into the ground. Our marriage was one big hassle over money, aex, everything it was possible to fight about. I was >Bt about to get a divorce when I became pregnant again. Now, after six years of misery, and two kids, we are finally splitting up. i I'm sure if my folks bad listened to Am Landers and let me alone, I would have broken up with the rat on my own. You're not as square and out of It as some peopit think. Hang in there, Ann. You're OK for an oW dame. DEAR FAN: Damned by faint praise-but thanks. praise is better than no praise at alt I COOl.
