Ho had to time the operation just right so it wouldn't inter- fere with any of his activities. He had it done just after nis last Search episode and just before he MCd the Hugh O'Brian Acting Awards. Next on his career agenda is a stage adventure. He's going to Chicago to perform In "Dos- perab and there Is talk of that becoming a TV special. The network's decision to drop Search was a big disap- pointment. Search represented a lot of and men'al an- guish to him. After his long-running, huge- ly successful Wyatt Earp ser- ies went off the air in '61, he was the hottest thing around. He says, merely as a statement of honest fact, that he turned down more than 70 firm series offers in tha ensuing decade, It wasn't un'.il Probe the original name of Search came along that he accepted another series. "But he says, "I'm not sure I picked the right one. It didn't develop the way I ex- pected and hoped It would." Midway through the season, they did a complete overhaul of the show, in an attempt humanize it. O'Brian thinks the change was definitely bene- ficial, but it came too late. He owned a piece of the show. Since he was only one of sev- eral rotating stars he was paid even when he wasn't on screen. Just another facet of the O'Brian empire, which even without Search is still one of Hollywood's biggest. (Newspaper Enterprise ban.) HOMEOWNERS!
