Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - April 27, 1972, Lethbridge, Alberta Ttiuixfoy, April 57, 197J THE IHHBR1DG1 HBSAID Canadians pay more for new autos TORONTO Canadian new car buyers pay about more than buyers in the United Stales fur North American-bum cars, even those made in Can- ada, says a survey published today. The survey, (lone by The Globe and Mail, shows Cana- dian car dealers arc being charged about 10 per cent more Ilian U.S. dealers lor cars built in Canada. The federal government is in vestigaling the pricing policy of automobile manufacturers. Offi- cials of the government's indus- try trade and commerce de- partment recently estimated that the gap between new-car prices in Canada and the U.S widened last year to between eight and nine per cent after six years of gradual reductions to a low of between three and 3.5 pe cent ill 1970. To determine the situation this ye r, The Globe and Mai made a study of pricing policie Ijy the "big four" manufaclut ers for their best-selling inlci mediate model." Dealers here and in Buffalo N.Y., were asked to supply pro else figures on their own cost as .'ell as the published Hf prices. They also suppn roug estimates of the price (lie charge a price-consdou purchaser who (lid not have trade-in. The cars Jii question were the bcvellc of General Motors' hcvrolet dealers; Ford's To- no; Chrysler's Plymouth Sal- Ililn and American Motors' latador. Dealers were asked for pnc- ig details on a hypothetical car vith a standard V-fl engine, au- o m a t i c transmission, power leering and an AM radio. 0-PEK-CENT CAI' The dealers' replies indicated general I0-pcr-cent differen- ial before stale, county and provincial sales taxes and de spite the appreciation of the Ca- ladian dollar to the point where t has been worth more than U.S. funds for nearly two months. The federal government has asked the four manufacturers for a detailed Accounting of the reasons for the price differentia' but thus far none has been prov iclccl. The survey says a Torin costs a Buffalo dealer 52.45 phis freight of about Th same car costs a Toronto dea ers plus freight. All Torinos being sold in Hi Eastern Canada market and majority sold in upper Ne York state are built at Ford plants in Oakvillc and S Thomas, Ont. A little more than half li difference in the price to dea ers for the Torino is accounte r by Canada's 12-per-cenl ux- sc tax on automobiles. A sev- i-per-ceiit excise tax was abol- hed in the U.S. last December. Thus, the excise lax on the orino is leaving a base rice at tho factory of for ic same care that is being sold o U.S. dealers for The xlra charge to Canadian deal rs of is within S3 of 10 per cent. The survey says all four man facturers follow similar poll ies in setting suggested lis irices. In each case the sug jested mark-ups to dealers are ibout 25 per cent of the invoiced prices. However, the survey also jhowed that dealers here and in Buffalo are selling at well below he list prices. The average mark-up on deals not involving .rade-ins was about 12 per cent in both cities. Thus using the Torino exam- ple, the suggested list price in Buffalo is Sa.illi but dealers will ell it for In Toronto, suggested price is with price of The survey says if the price to Toi'onto dealers was the same as ow charged to Buffalo dealers, the excise tax would be instead of S324. If the dealer used the same 12-per cent markup his price to the consumer would be about instead of sav- ing to the consumer of 5300.
