Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - April 26, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta April 26, 1074 THE LtTHBRIDQE HERALD 3 Government accused of overdoing it OTTAWA (CP) An ounce )f prevention may indeed be worth a pound of cure, but :here was general feeling imong Conservatives Thursday that the environment department may >e overdoing this maxim. The issue was a government Jill that would give the iepartrnent sweeping powers ,o restrict just about anything it considers a contaminant. It received second reading, approval in principle, and was referred to the Commons fisheries committee for detailed study and possible amendment. Among other things, the bill would enable the government to take action when it suspects that a "substance is being or is likely to be released into the environment" in quantities large enough to be dangerous from an ecological or human health viewpoint GENERAL FARM Presents The Weather SUNRISE SATURDAY SUNSET H L Pre Lethbridge Pincher Creek Medicine Hat Edmonton Grande Prairie Banff Calgary Victoria Penticton Prince George Kamloops Vancouver Saskatoon Regina Winnipeg Toronto Ottawa Montreal St. John's Halifax Charlottetown Fredencton Chicago New York Miami 76 43 72 43 82 44 72 44 66 39 69 37 75 44 53 43 57 41 70 44 61 38 48 41 75 47 72 48 66 42 59 34 59 36 52 36 33 30 43 31 35 28 46 28 67 46 63 47 75 67 09 .23 01 68 FORECAST: Lethbridge, Medicine Hat regions Today Cloudy periods A few isolated afternoon showers. While there was general en- dorsement of the bill, there was concern about the "likely to be released" provision. Frank Oberle (PC-Prince George-Peace River) said the government could be more specific and explain what con- stitutes a pollutant. ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE "When you have to deal with unknown factors, it becomes almost impossible Mr Oberle exhorted members on both sides of the House to exert "a great deal of diligence" in committee to ensure such guides are forthcoming Walter Dinsdale is) said the bill is "anticipating the possible contamination of man's environment" and asked Environment Minister Jack Davis whether "he is aware how broad the im- plications are." On pollution control generally, Mr. Dinsdale wondered whether national measures are adequate because "air and water are no respecters of international boundaries." He said the fisheries com- mittee should strive for co- operation between Canada and the United States to develop a continental approach to pollution control Congratulations to THE NOOK We would like to welcome The Nook as Distributors of BROILMASTER BARBECUES B.
