Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - April 26, 1973, Lethbridge, Alberta Ann Landers DEAE ANN LANDERS: Can you settle a pretty wild argument? A friend of mine cut off his finger in an acci- dent. He just threw it away. My mother was veiy upset when she heard about it. She said a person should always bury any dismembered part of the body (especially a fin- ger or a hand) because if an animal should get ahold of it and chew it, that person would feel the pain and it can be ex- cruciating. This sounds to me like an old wives' tale and I said so. My mother insists she is right. DEAR ANN LANDERS: You were needlessly insulting to J and J of Winter Park, Florida, who gave up sex be- cause they said it was the cause of all the rotten things In the world. They did not ask YOU to give up sex (which might have justified your out- they merely told yoa that THEY had given it up. You have been far kinder to readers who confessed out- landish, immoral and illegal behavior. Why did you lash out at this couple? Are they hurting anybody? Are they costing the taxpayers any- thing? J and J might not be as nutty as you think. Sex has been the cause of more mis- ery and grief than any single DEAR _ ANN LANDERS: I'm a nitpicking copyreader with a built-in eye for small errors. I caught a cute one in your column recently. It was from a reader who com- plained, "If there are 17 peo- ple in a room and one mos- quito he'll find me." This reverse sexism is too much. Why didn't you tell the read- er that only female mosqui- Please clarify. Wis. Q and A DEAR Q.: Sorry to have to disagree with your mother, but she is wrong. When a digit or a limb is dismembered, the nerve endings sometimes become irritated and the per- son then feels the same kind of pain he would experience if he still had the missing digit or member. It's pretty weird, for example, to have a pain in a foot that has been amputated. The eerie theory may seem logical to the per- son suffering from "phantom" pains, as they are called, but has no validity whatever. thing I know of. I've come to the conclusion that the whole world has gone sex-crazy and- I'm fed up with it. If people indulged in sex only when they were in love, wouldn't life be beautiful? DEAR CHAIR: Yes, it would but don't stand on one foot waiting for it to hap- pen, dear. The sex drive is second only to man's instinct for survival. Sex as an ex- pression of love came much later. I deny having insulted or "lashed out" at the married couple who equated sex with "disease, war, mental illness and all the rotten things in the world." I merely said I was happy that these kooks had found each other, and I wished them both lots of luck. toes bite? Ralph U-Know- Who DEAR RALPH: I didn't tell tbe reader because I didn't know it. If you're such a red-hot copyreader why didn't you flag me after the first edition so I could change it? I didn't realize Women's Lib had hit tbe insect world but thanks for cluing me, Ralph, honey.
