A newspaper advertisement taid customers at a grocery store could buy a few things and pet a "tree Item." Tiie customers were not very happy, and neither was the Ad- vertising Stnndards Council, which found (he grocery store and service station owners had bioken the Canadian Code of Advertising Standards. These two were nmong 16 cases o( infringements on the code in the first quarter of 1972, when the council investigated 74 complaints. Complaints have concerned misleading advertisements newspapers, on radio and televi- sion, display cards, h.indbills packages and in catalogues, They dealt with advertising of dairy products, draperies, new cars, plugs, credit unions, soft drinks, record club offers housing developments, televi- sion sets and clothing. All DISCONTINUED A credit union which warned its customers (hat everyone else in the consumer credit business was unduly costly and unfair to consumers was told the council considered the ads in violation of the unfair disparagement clause of the advertising code.
