The birds swoop in to see what's been turned up for the menu. Later, the 20-acre field will be full of cucumber vines. Boy survives gorge tall HAMILTON (OP) Sarden, who fell 40 feet into the Buttermilk Falls gorge here, las been "grounded" for at least a week by his doctor. No bones were broken. No more climbing for him while 31 stitches in his legs and arms heal, the doctor said Mon- day after police and firemen lad worked frantically among jagged rocks to raise the 13- rear-old boy to a waiting ambu- ance at the top. Before the Friday rescue, 12- year-old Allister Wood, who saw lis friend slip off the craggy ace of the 100-foot gorge, stood trembling and ashen. "I thought he was dead, I really said young Allister. "He fell on his face sorta in a said Allister, "and he wasn't moving." "I ran over to him and I just saw he said, turning his blood stained palms upward. "This is his blood." "Then he came to and he was screaming. I took off my shut and put it on his head where he was all cut." Then Allister left Tony with four other youngsters who had been playing' together and scrambled up the sheer face of the gorge and flagged down a passing car. He told the woman driver what had happened and she called police. Allister then went back down the gorge to his young friend. Fire and police official de- scended the gorge with a wooden stretcher lowered from a fire truck crane. Tony's five young friends went to the top of the gorge to wait for him to be raised. They told police and reporters that Tony started climbing up. "We told him to come back down but he wouldn't." He was about 40 feet up when a rock be as hanging onto gave way and he fell. Economic growth slowed GENEVA (AP) The poor Soviet harvest resulted in a sharp slowdown in East Eu- ropean economic growth last year, says a United Nations survey published today. The region's income In- creased by 4.9 per cent, the smallest growth rate of the last two decades. The Soviet Union registered a growth rate of four per cent, compared with a planned 62. Moscow's East European part- ners, most of which had record harvests, raised their national incomes by 7.3 per cent, better- ing a planned 6.5-per-cent growth. Soviet industrial-production growth, 6.5 per cent compared with 7.7 per cent in also markedly trailed the 8.4-per- cent gain for its allies, an accel- eration from 6.8 in the previous year. Romania, with an 117-per- cent increase, again was the fastest growing country indus- trially, trailed by Poland and Bulgaria. FUR COAT STORAGE TIME THE LETHBRIDGE FURRIERS PHONE 327-2209 CANADIAN ;
