He was 74 and had been in hospital since March 23. The nature of Jonas's illness, described officially only as grave, was never disclosed. A medical bulletin by the presidential office late Tuesday had said Jonas's condition was constantly deteriorating. It was widely believed in Vienna that Jonas, a life-long Socialist and head of state for nine years succumbed after a long battle with cancer. He was first reported ill last August. Chancellor Bruno Kreisky said Jonas knew of his "serious illness" since the summer, and that "he wished expressly to fulfil his tasks until the last possible moment." Kreisky termed Jonas "a great Austrian, who set an ex- ample of fulfilment of duties and firmness of conviction." Under a special law enacted April 8. the presidential func- tions were transferred to the three presidents of parliament, with Jonas continuing as titular head of state. A long-time mayor of the city of Vienna. Jonas was elected president in 1965 and re-elected in 1971. In the 1971 election he de- feated Kurt Waldheim, who later became secretary- general of the United Nations. He was born Oct. 4. 1899, in Vienna, and worked as a type- setter, proofreader and clerk.
