Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - April 22, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta Monday, April LETHBRIDGE HERALD-11 Leeds United one step away from clinching first place after win LONDON (CP) Leeds United is a step away from clinching first place in English League First Division soccer following a 3-2 win Saturday over Ipswich Town. Allan Clarke's goal in the 6th minute snapped a 2-2 tie and gave Leeds the win, the club's 60th point with one game remaining Liverpool, last year's winners, was held to a 0-0 draw by Everton to remain second with 55 points and three games left. In the First Division basement, Southampton and Manchester United drew 1-1 to remain locked in a battle for survival. Birmingham, the other leading candidate for relegation, drew 1-1 with Newcastle. Middlesborough, assured of promotion to the First Division, whipped Sheffield Wednesday 8-0 Celtic, headed for its ninth successive Scottish League title, beat Aberdeen 2-0 Leeds, which led, the First Division by nine points in January before Liverpool began a late surge, stormed into a 2-0 lead with goals from Peter Lonmer and Billy Bremner in the first 22 minutes But Ipswich, third in the table, tied the score by the 55th minute with goals from Brian Talbot and Bryan Hamilton Liverpool saw their title hopes dim by failing to penetrate Everton s defence in the Merseyside battle watched by the day's largest crowd of Manchester United, battling to stay in the division they have graced for the last 20 years, got a point from Southampton in a 1-1 tie Jim McCalliog, signed a month ago from Wolverhampton Wanderers.
