(AP) Her- oin possession charges against actress and singer Barbara McNair were dropped by fed- eral prosecutors Wednesday after investigation by the United States Bureau of Narcot- ics and Dangerous Drugs. At the same time, a grand jury indicted Miss McNair's husband and manager, Rick Manzie, 32, on a charge of at- tempting to possess a heroin compound. The two were arrested Oct. 17, 1972, at the Playboy Club in McAfee, N.J., where Miss McNair was performing. Fed- eral agents said then the couple had accepted half an ounce of heroin intercepted at Newark airport and brought to Miss McNair's dressing room by agents posing as delivery men. WASHINGTON (Reuter) The new film State of Siege bes- mirches the real life of Dan Mitrione, an American police adviser who wag slain in Uru- guay by guerrillas in 1970, the state department charged Wednesday. The film tells the story of an American adviser in a Latin American country who partici- pated in police torture and bru- tality. It is said to be based roughly on the life of Mitrione. Department spokesman Charles Bray said the film "quite unjustly besmirches and blackens" the life of Mitrione, adding that no official of the state department or the Agency for International Development had participated in torture or condoned police brutality of any kind. The film, directed by Con- stantine Costa-Gavras, who also directed the film Z about the Greek political scene, has re- ceived considerable critical ac- claim. Jane Fonda's early pictures, the station cancelled a sched- uled showing of the film. Miss Fonda drew criticism recently when she described some of the returned American prisoners of war as "liars and hypocrites" because of their stories of torture. DALLAS, Tex.
