Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - April 21, 1972, Lethbridge, Alberta Tllf tn'URItlOC MtRAlD Frftfny. Apiil 71. HOME OF THE WEEK KITCHEbK DINETTE JJMI-, I How lo -Ulr.'ii'hvr arcliiLecMirni styl- ing lughlight.s this well pro- roriioned home for an aver- age size family. Basically, this design lias two bedrooms, but the study could become a third bedroom if desired, temporar- ily by using the folding doors as shown on the plan, or per- manently by building a solid wall. Sliding window walls give access to Ihe "U' shaped cov- ered terrace from tlie study, the dining area and the dinette. floor plan is the bnscmenMess version nf the Imusn. w-jjMi utilities behind thr I'e.sido ?i washroom con- veniently situated for the ar- dtjitt gtjrdeiier and car-tinker- or. For .small jobs your best bet is to yet a ready-mix product (o you add the water. Trcre are a variety of these using sand or grave! and ce- ment in the right proportions. A mix is more expensive than buying ingredients separately, but if you are mixing only a inuill amount, it will be money- saving in the long run, When you shop for sand and gravel you will find that you can buy it only in large amounts. This is fine for large jobs, but mixing concrete for a drive- way, for example, is not an easy job. What you will prob- ably want is the ready-mix con- crete brought right to your home in a cement mixer. Aside from the labor saved, which is considerable you will get a mix that has been put together in exactly the right proportions of sand, stones, ce- ment and water. One thing about ready-to-use concrete that you must remem- ber you must order exactly what you need. You cuivt save it for use at another time as you can dry ingredients. Cement contractors can help you figure what you will need if you give them the dimen- sions. Concrete is sold in cubic yards and one way of figuring what you will need is taking good mixer lite area in square feet ami di- i aiding by certain figures for j Ihe thickness you want. Divide] by 50 for a Ihickness of 6 in.: j 75 for 4 in.: 100 for 3 in.: for 2 in.; 300 for I in. The an- swer is the number of cubic yards needed. If yon are putting in a slab JO ft. square and 3 in. thick you will need one cubic yarci. This formula allows for a'little excess in case of error. There is a great deal of ad- vance work when you use a completely mixed concrete, in- cluding placing your order well in advance. Before that day comes, have your forms in place and tightly made. Line up all the help vou will need, plenty of friends anil reatives. Concrete dries faster than yon think so don't try to handle it alone if the job is at all large. Have plenty of tools for ev- eryone. You will need shovel and rake lo spread the cement around. Speed is more import- ant than skill at this point. You will need a long length of wood, longer than the widest part of (lie form and absolutely straight. Use this to level the concrete. It is to your advantage lo get Ihe mixer as close to the work as possible. Hauling concrete to the site is a lot of work and you will pay for all Ihe lime the driver lias to wail around. If you think the driveway won't take the weight of the mixer, get some 2x12 planks for j the mixer lo drive on. Use i planks if it has to drive over' the lawn and don't do Ihis sort of thing at all if Ihe lawn is wei.
