Private Stations Can't Afford It OTTAWA (CP) Murray! Chercover, president of the CTV: network, said here proposals lor increasing Canadian content on radio and TV "wiQ destroy tbe existing system." Mr. Chercbver toH a public hearing of tbe Canadian Radio- Television Commission that pri- vate broadcasters simply do not have the money to put the pro- posals into effect. The CRTC proposals an- nounced in February call for 60-per-cent Canadian program- ing on TV and mkiiminn of 30-per-cent Canadian music on AM radio stations. There are also recommendations for limit- ing the numbers of commercial interruptions of TV programs allowing commercial -inter- ruptions in newscasts. Mr. Chercover told the com-. mission, now in the second week of the hearing, there is no lack of talent in Canada for producing Canadian program- ing. But production costs money the money is not available, be said: M. E. Wright, a chartered ac- countant and partner in Clark- son Gordon and Co., presented a study which he said showed im- plementation of the commis- sion's proposals would cost CTV and its affiliated stations be- tween and in profits lost before taxes. Mr. Wright said the combined profits of the network and affiS- ates before taxes for the year By BOB THOMAS RAKCHO LA COSTA, Calif. (AP) Actor Richard Creona was here for a mom location which might mark tbe cod of his movie acting career. The movie is Doctor's Wives, a saucy tale of the high times among affluent medics. It is being produced by Mike Fran- tovich, tbe man who gave you Bob aad Carol and Ted and Alice and dim-led by George Schaefer. If Uu is indeed Crenna's final flick, he is going out with a bit of sensation. He has bedroom scenes with Diana Sands, win plays his mistress, aad with Janice Rule, who plays his wife. "She rapes wife, that Crenna explained. "Imag- ine this happening to guy win always played Mf. The reason why Doctors' Wives could mark the end ol Crenna's film career is that be is going into partnership with Danny Thomas in a production company. First off, Crenna wil act as executive producer o Thomas's new series for ABC Make Room for Granddaddy. "That'll just be Use begto- said Crenna. "Danny and I also have a deal to mak three films for ABC's Movie of the Week." SURPRISE FOR SOME This development hi Crenna' career came as a surprise to those who know him only from his actiig on -The Sand Pebbles, Ma- toned. "But they don't realize that 1 uve also directed between SO and 60 television be says. "I also directed pilot films or two series that later !o Time for Sergeants and i'eody and Me, as well as a couple that didnt' sell. I've al ays been interested in produc tkn." He began doing something about it during tbe run of The McCoys. After the third ear of the bucolic series, he ecided UK only way to te- as sanity was to direct some c the segments. Co-star Walter Brenoan tok dm: "If you're crazy enough to want to do ahead." Crenna did, found he like: ttfeg en tbe other side of the camera, ended up directing l Andy Griffith shows as well. He was offered the chance 1 direct a feature, If It's Tuesday This Must Be Belgium, bu rassed it.up to act in anothe ilm, The Midas Bun. An error in judgment, he now admits. Crenna said both partner plan to continue their other car eers. "Danny will still play nig clubs, and I will take movt roles if 1 have the time. But th main thing is to get tbe organ zation started." ended Aug. 31, 1969, totalled Native Council Formed WIDNESDAT Our Town Pinnocn'o fni C[ Cartoons News HillDilliei Lime People Movie: Mr. Dressup Remarkable Andrew Ed Allen Take 30 Mission: Impossible Western School!
