Sacred site crowds gather besides Ganges River. A plunge worth eternal life INSURANCE LIABILITY BONDS AUTO FIRE ROSSITER AGENCIES LTD. Established 1911 Lownr Floor 517 4th AVI. S. Phone 327-1541 HARDWAR, India (AP) Great masses of Indians streamed into this riverside city this week to try to reap from the sacred Ganges a Hindu promise of eternal life made only once every 12 years when the stars say it's time. Gnarled old holy men, wrinkled villagers taking time off from the farm and fresh young mothers with their children mixed with beggars, saints, frauds and merchants. Authorities in Hardwar, 120 miles northeast of New Delhi, estimated 3Vz million persons were drawn to the sacred site by Hindu legend that says a holy Ganges dip during the weekend washes away sins and opens the gate to heaven. But as the spectacle unfolded and masses surged toward the bank for a bath no one among the more than policemen controlling the crowds really knew how many faithful were in the city. They were everywhere. Families spread their bedrolls and set up camps along the beggar-lined streets. At night, thousands of miniature camp fires dotted the landscape. The lucky moved into tents erected by the authorities of Uttar Pradesh state. The unlucky curled up for the night in the dust, a rock and a turban for a pillow. SEE NECTAR Ancient legend says the gods spilled life-giving nectar from a pitcher here as they fled demons. When Jupiter enters Kumbh on the zodiac and this is the time drops of the nectar rise to the surface of the Ganges and work their miracles on bathers, the legend adds. "It's a great good fortune that the occasion has come up after 12 said Raghu Nandan Singh, a grizzled 50- year-old pilgrim from Brailli. "It doesn't matter how many sins you have committed. No matter what your sins, they will be washed away." Thousands of saffron-robed Sadhus-Hindu holy men also came down out of their Himalayan retreats for the Kumbh Mela, or "Pitcher Festival." The city of Hardwar, with a normal population of only sits beside the Ganges just where it flows cool and green from the craggy Himalayan foothills and spreads browning and warming across the northern Indian plains. It's in a pleasant setting, with easy accessibility, ample parking, obliging staff and a huge patronage. What is it? A shopping centre? A supermarket? No, it's a church. "We're in the business of retailing religion and effective business principles should be applied in doing said Rev. Dr. Robert H. Schuller, founder and senior pastor of the Garden Grove, Calif., Community Church. It's a combination sit-in, drive-in superchurch, whose success has sparked more than 50 drive-in churches across the United States and whose ballooning growth has been keyed by Dr. Schuller to satisfying the clientele. "In a voluntary society like ours, people will ignore you if you don't give them what they want and he said in an interview. Offering his own version of supplying to suit the market, he added: "Find a hurt and heal it. "People today are looking for greater confidence and self-esteem in a time of emotional and spiritual hurt. They feel disfranchised, alienated and dehumanized in a non-caring society. It's a time for healing for encouragement and reassurance." Concentrating on that vein in his services and leaving specific Bible teaching to supplementary adult classes, he has built up a congregation of more than a staff of nine clergymen, trained lay workers and a television audience of millions. The church started from almost nothing in 1955 when Dr. Schuller, then a newly ordained minister of the Reformed Church of America, was allotted to start a West Coast congregation. Surveying the prospects, he unconventionally decided to rent a defunct drive-in theatre. The setting has swelled into a 22-acre landscaped garden of trees and splashing fountains, a 15-storey office building topped by a 90-foot lighted cross and an amphitheatre that seats inside, with spaces for 300 cars outside.
