Ltd., PHONE 328-8196 Company disputes statement FORT McMURRAY, Alta. (CP) Great Canadian Oil Sands (GCOS) Thursday disputed a statement made at Lethbridge by a Calgary petroleum engineer that the company's reported loss of in 1972 was manufactured by deducting allowances totalling million for amortization, interest and depreciation. In a statement, the company said costs recorded for depreciation, amortization and interest represented earlier outlays of hard cash and such costs must be recovered by any investor in computing profits. in tnis respect, the statement said, GCOS is no different from other business ventures. The company's financial statements had been audited by independent chartered accounts and followed generally accepted accounting principles. The company also denied statements by Calgary engineer Joseph Yanchula, a New Democratic Party- candidate in the 1971 provincial election, that the company was under pricing synethetic crude in sales to its parent company, Sun Oil. GCOS said the company also sells its crude to other purchasers, some not connected with GCOS or with Sun Oil. It sought the highest possible price for synthetic crude no matter where it was sold. PARTS and SERVICE SALES Cash speaks louder than credit NEW YORK (AP) Customers who pay cash now may be able to get discounts ot up to six per cent off the displayed price in stores that accept American Express credit cards, Consumers Union says. The consumer group said yesterday that it has obtained a settlement of a suit in which it alleged that a clause in the contract between American Express and retailers violated federal law by barring merchants from offering discounts for cash. An American Express spokesman said the company did not 'agree in the settlement that it violated anti-trust law, but it undertook to notify the merchants who accept its card that they are free to discount prices to cash customers. The discount would be based on the saving to a merchant of the two-to six-per-cent service charge he pays American Ex- press on a credit-card sale. Consumers Union said 11 has a similar suit in U.S. district court in Washington against BankAmericard.
