Dr. Hoogevene shows slides India theme of festival By PAUL ANDERSEN Herald News Service CLARESHOLM A little bit of India came to Glares- holm recently when the Ca- nadian Girls in Training and Explorers joined together to present a three hour East Indian Mission Festival com- plete with sitar music, danc- ing, samples of Indian foods, a street bazaar and infor- mation booth on eastern reli- gions. Two native Indian women who are now living in south- ern Alberta, Mrs. Harnet Hari, who lives west of High River, and Mrs. Urmilla Sood, a nurse at the Clares- holm Care Centre, gave dem- onstrations on how to put on a sari, the Indian dress for women. They answered doz- ens of questions from the au- dience at the Claresholm United Church. The festival started in the main sanctuary of the church where sari-clad members of the CGIT and Explorers sang Indian songs. With the help of the Indian women they demonstrated the intricacies of draping the yards of sari cloth round and round the body in the most elegant manner. Dr. and Mrs. Larry Hoogevene showed slides stressing the missionary work of the Christian reli- gion. A booth was devoted to giv- ing a short description of the founding religions of India, Hindu and Buddhist. There was a short explana- tion of the various kinds of Yoga as it is practiced in the far east. The evening was non- denominaticDal and it was entertaining and educational. Tha two women were bom- barded with questions from young and old on the way of life, geography, climate, art and culture and the caste sys- tem of India. Mrs. George Goslin was co- ordinator and chief organizer of the program.
