Lethbridge Herald (Newspaper) - April 18, 1970, Lethbridge, Alberta Sterilization Grants For Married Men LONDON (CP) - Hackney has become the first London borough to provide grants for married men who want to be sterilized. The borough council approved the proposal at a meeting Wednesday over the opposition of Roman Catholic, Jewish and other minority groups. ' Designed to restrain the population explosion, the grant will enable fathers to undergo treatment with the council paying the cost for men who show they haven't sufficient funds. The action was launched by the company last month against the International Typographical Union, the Mailers Union and the Vancouver Printing Pressmen's Union, claiming they were in contempt of a B. C. Supreme Court injunction granted the company by Mr. Justice A. B. Macfarlane. The injunction ordered the unions to cease slowdown tactics which the company said resulted in loss of revenue. The contract, retroactive to May 4, 1969, will give workers an average pay raise of 78 cents an hour during a three-year period. CHANGING RIVERS-The Russians have started work on a 15-year plan to divert the waters of the Pechora, and Yenisei Rivers from the Arctic Ocean toward the desert region around the Caspian and Aral Seas. The scheme is designed to irrigate 85,000,000 acres of arid land and drain another 150,000,000 acres of swamp. Huburt Lamb, expert on climate at Britain's meteorological office, says the re-direction of the rivers could cause a shift In the world's climatic belts. Wages Rise In Canada OTTAWA (CP) - Wages and salaries in a broad cross-section of Canadian industry rose to an average of $124.64 in February from $122.96 in January and $115.30 in February last year, the Dominion Bureau of Statistics reported today. Wages and salaries in Manufacturing rose to $160.98 from $159.47 in January and $148.43 in Febrtiary last year, while in the important durable goods section of manufacturing, they rose to $142.05 from $138.85 in January and $130.05 in February last year. ' The bureau said all industries except finance, insurance and real estate recorded gains, and all regions of the country shared in the increases.
