Hugh Homer advised consumers to buy up sides of beef because the price would soar in about three weeks. The statement "put us on the spot (and) confused the issue more than rectifying CN Rail deficit over MONTREAL (CP) Despite high revenues from operations in 1973, Canadian National Railways recorded a deficit of million during the year. An interim financial report released Tuesday showed that revenues from railway oper- ations in Canada and the United States reached a record of billion. Railway operating expenses were billion, leaving a net railway operating profit of million. This profit sur- passed the 1972 profit by million and was the highest since 1956. The company said the deficit of million, compared with million in 1972, resulted from payment of interest on long-term debt. A spokesman said the deficit came as a disappointment to CN which has seen the deficit decline in recent years and had hoped to move into a surplus situation in 1973. The company had set a sur- plus of million as its budget goal for 1973. But revenue losses resulted from reduced traffic during a strike from July to September of 1973, and retroactive ex- penses caused by the arbitrated settlement reached last January put that goal out of reach. The financial report showed that all the activities of CN, including railway, tele- communications, hotels, trucking companies and other activities, produced an operating income before payment of interest on long-term million compared with million in 1972. Interest on the long-term debt amounted to million and this converted the operating profit into a deficit of million. Big oil strike recorded OSLO (Reuter) Norway announced a big oil strike today in its section of the North Sea. The government oil directo- rate said the operator, Mobil Exploration Norway, had car- ried out tests of its first well in the Brent field, northwest of Bergen, showing a maximum daily production of barrels. Experts here said the Brent field could have bigger potential than the Ekofisk field, operated by the Phillips group and expected to have a production of almost 19 million tons by 1980. Drilling of a second well has started to the northeast to test the magnitude of the field, the announcement said, and a third well will be drilled between the two next summer. Satellite launched GLENWOOD, N.J. (Reuter) The Westar I communications satellite has been successfully put in position above the equator with the firing of a small rocket, Western Union said Tuesday. The Satellite, the first U.S. domestic communication satellite, was launched from the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida Saturday night. However, an increase of 20 per cent is predicted in Montreal in 1974. A major Toronto- based real estate company predicts the disparity in house prices between major urban areas across Canada will narrow. Graph shows average prices of homes in various cities across Canada since 1969. In only one the average price of a house dropped from the 1972 figure. ;
