(Reuter) Film star Peter Fonda, 35, was divorced Monday from his wife of 13 years but failed in his attempt to force her to drop the surname "Fonda." Fonda, son of actor Henry Fonda and brother of actress, Jane, asked the court to order his estranged wife, Susan Brewer Fonda, 33, to stop using her married name. Superior Court Judge Richard Wells, granting Mrs. Fonda monthly alimony and a total of monthly child support for her two children, said he cannot force her to drop the name. He said judges can approve married women resuming their maiden names, but cannot force them to change their name against their will. Mrs. Fonda's lawyer, Simon Taub, said Mrs. Fonda's chil- dren, Bridget, 10, and Justin, 7, are both named Fonda and she wants to continue to use the name. Fonda's lawyer, Arthur Herman, said Mrs. Fonda had said recently she did not want to use the name and that Fonda thought a court order should be issued to change her name legally. WASHINGTON (AP) -The United States treasury depart- ment has imposed a ban against melting or exporting copper pennies, in an attempt to head off hoarding and de- struction of pennies for their copper content. Any person convicted of melting or exporting the one- cent coins will be subject to a maximum penalty of and five years in prison, the treasury department said today. Treasury Secretary George Shultz, who approved the ban, said demand for U.S. pennies in the last three months has totalled two billion, double the demand, for the same period t year ago. "This unprecedented increase in the outflow of pennies cannot be explained by legitimate needs for commerce and trade, hut can only be attributed to speculation that the metal content of the penny will ultimately exceed its face Shultz said. The demand has exceeded the U.S. Mint's ability to produce copper cents in recent weeks.
