The common dve-armed slar- fish share shallow waters with oyslcrs and other edible shell- fish. Where there is one, there are hound to he hundreds more male arid female. In s u m m e r, when Ihc water reaches just Hie right temper- ature, the ndulis launch their reproductive cells. The sperm anil egg cells enter the walcr through liny pores between their arms. This is lhe one and only contribution that lhe par- ents do make to ue would call family life. During the brief busy season, SORT OF TAKING STOCK, PFARIE! BLONDIE-By Chic Young countless numbers of male and female cells becloud the water. Each cell drifts helplessly around "and soon perishes un- less fertilized. The smaller sperm cell has a tail like flag- cllum and swims frantically around lo find an egg cell. When tins occurs, the two sin- gle cells unite and form a fer- tilized called a zygotc. Tile, dynamic forces of reproduction immediately spark a fantaslic series oi changes. The zygole divides into two cells, the tuo cells divide into four, then into eight, 1C and so on. Before the first day is done. Ibis amazing unit of life is a blastula. a hollow ball two layers of cells. The cells on the outside are cilialcd with .iny hairs and the blaslula waves them to travel through Lhe waler. As the embryo con- tinues to develop, ttie hollow inside is remodeled lo form the typical hollow' stomach of the cchinodcrm. eventually, skin becomes the lough body of the starfish. But this doesn't happen until his days as a free swimming larva are over. The exisLing cchinoderms arc lhe only animals with a five- sided body plan, But perhaps their ancestors were everyday two-sided creatures. At any rate, this is what the develop- ment of larva seems to sug- gest. During this phase cf life, the developing starfish is a two sided creature. The five side pattern emerges only afler the larva settles down to a life on Lhe ocean floor. CJuesiluns asfcea Ly cnndirjn of Herald readers should be mailed lo Ask Andy, P.O.
