S*. THIRD AVE S Scientists Probe Ocean Depths J L Strange Sea Creatures The search for and capture of two of the sea's strangest creatures, the sea elephant and the giant sawfish, are featured in The Collectors when CTVs Untamed World presents The Challenging Sea, Sunday, April 19, 5:00-5:30 p.m. on Channel 13. The "coUecbors" of fee title are a group of scientists who capture creatures of the deep for exhibition acd study at California's famed Marineland. The first leg of the expedition takes them in search of sea elephants, peculiar looking members of the seal family once bunted for oil. These mammals have a snout that can grow up to a foot in length and resembles an elephant's trunk which is bow the sea elephant got his name. The "collectors" know that each year Guadalupe Island, off the coast of Mexico, becomes home for thousands of these great lumbering creatures, who return for fee mating season. Sighting them is easy, capturing these giants of the sea is a different story. Next stop on the agenda is the small fishing village of San Bias, also on the Mexican coastline. Here enormous sawfish can be found in great abundance. Their long saws, made up of 68 razor sharp teeth, can grow to six feet in length and are approximately one foot wide. Catching one is a difficult and dangerous chore and film shows a spectacular battle be> tween fish and fisherman as one of the "collectors" struggles to land a 13 foot sawfish.
