Milk River Phone 647-3838 PAUL MADGE Res. 647-3812 Ric Swihart Dual purpose alternative Corn could become the most valuable agricultural commodity in Southern Alberta and it has made great strides in that direction since being remtroduced to the area about lour vears ago. It was in 1970-71 that this reoporter started rubbing elbows with Stan Freyman al the Lethbndge Research Station and Ralph Trimmer oi the Alberta department of agriculture These men were the principal pushers behind the Alberta Corn Committee, a group of scientists, agriculturists and producers interested in promoting the use and production of corn In that year, about 1.800 acres ol corn was grown on irrigated land in Southern Alberta Poor weather Conditions a lack ol adequate varieties and a lack ol grower experience caused a severe cutback in production the lollowing year when only 800 acres oi corn was grown The drop was seriously looked at bv the provincial government which was faced with the opportunity ol locating a distilling in Alberta. Since corn is a prime product used in ihe distilling industry, raw product grown in Southern Alberta would provide farmers with an assured income and market. Because corn needed lor the distilling industry has to be in the grain form, the provincial government instituted a subsidy program It would pay 40 cents per bushel for grain corn in the 1972-73 crop 30 cents per bushel this vear. 20 cents next year and 10 cents in the 1975-76 crop year. Grain corn is harvested an ordinary combine to get only the kernels ol corn It dii'ters from silage corn which is harvested with a chopping machine ihe entire corn plant, including stalk, loaves, cob and kernel Irom about six inches above the ground. It is used lor livestock leed in the lorm ol a type ol And il is in this area which has seen the greatest explosion in increased production In 1971-72. onh about 1.000 acres ol silage corn was grown This jumped to about 8 000 acres the next and nearly doubled to 15.000 acres last year And experts are predicting 40 000 acres plus lor 1974- suggestion lor corn producers He wonders wh> farmers don't plant a dual purpose variety corn one which would yield lots ol bushels ot grain corn or lots ol tons ol hay. which ever method was used to harvest it Being an employee of the company holding the supply contract for the distillery m Lethbndge. Mr. Tiessen would like to see the corn harvested for gram He would like to see the grain corn acreage increase this year to about 5.000 acres, up from about 2.800 acres harvested for gram corn in 1973-74. He leels about 50 growers will be needed to meet this objective And the surprising fact is that his hrm wants 20.000 acres under contract by 1978 But back to silage. The price ol alfalla hay will have a great bearing on the price ol silage this vear Regardless ol the type ol corn to be harvested il a larmer did plant a dual purpose variety, he could wait till the last moment and then harvest the crop lor the type of corn which would return him the most money You don't get that choice in many other crops. Cutworms, or at least the threat ol them are raising their heads again throughout Southern Al- berta. large number ol moths in 1973 and good reproduction conditions in fields last fall has resulted in predictions of severe damage lor 1974 crops The key to protection is to keep close tabs on all lields. especially those grown on fields left in summerlallow in 1973. Farmers should take care to watch winter wheat lields, the first to be hit by the worms FARM TRACTOR BATTERY SPECIAL!
