Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - April 16, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta Tuesday, April LETHBRIDGE Ski amputees can enjoy speed again NORTH VANCOUVER, B.C (CP) Novices struggling to stay upright on two skis may find it a bit disheartening to be overtaken on the slopes by onelegged skiers who are schussing down Grouse Mountain in increasing numbers. The Disabled Skiers Association of British Columbia, formed two years ago, now boasts 50 members. Membership includes amputees, polio victims and children with cerebral anyone with a disability and a determination to ski. A Instrumental in forming the association were Sue Heberd, a senior physiotherapist at Van- couver General Hospital; Gary Lewis, an electrical designer, and Julie Lewis, part-time physiotherapist and ski instructor. The Grouse Mountain Ski School got into the act. Ski director Ornulf Johnsen, who has long been working on ski programs for the blind, offered free lessons. He freed Julie from her regular teaching duties so she could spent weekends instructing handicapped skiers. "They're a joy to she said. "They have 100 per cent more drive than the skiers in my other classes. "Skiing gives them a chance to feel speed again, which they so sadly miss. "It gives them a sense of freedom and exhilaration, and most of all, a personal challenge of the best sport to share with family and friends on an equal level. Below-the-knee amputees ski with their artificial limbs and use regular skis and poles. Above-the-knee amputees remove their artificial limbs and ski on one leg with the use of outriggers.
