Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - April 14, 1973, Lethbridge, Alberta 36 THE IFTHBRIDGC HCRAID Saturday, April i4, Trouble brewing on Isle of Man LONDON' f API Something is amiss on one of Britain's old- est and smallest dependencies, the Isle of Man. Just when the islanders off England's northwest coast should be dressing up their GO by 30 miles to receive the usual thousands of summer visitors from the mainland, nationalistic ferment appears to be growing. More and more wealthy people from Britain are build- ing vacation homes on the island, upsetting the native Manxmen. The Isle of Man is a depend- ency cf the British Crown, and London holds the ultimate re- sponsibility for good govern- ment. But the isle has its own parliament, called the Court of Tynwald. its own laws and its own courts. This week a local nationalist organization named Mec Vannin sent a petition to the Queen ask- in5 that she authorize suspen- sion of the Tynwald. "A malady besets this the petition said. "Perhaps the most disturbing point of this sickness is the attitude of. the general public to the incidents. When normally respectable ma- trons rejoice in total de- struction by fire something must indeed be amiss.'' WANTS INQUIRY Mec Vannin wants London to set up a tribunal to inquire into the situation. The "sickness" began to sur- face in February when a local reporter received a scribbled note threatening acts of sabo- tage. A S50.000 bungalow was burned to the ground a month later. Police said it was arson. Another fire caused S12.000 worth of damage to a house owned by the Manx term for property owners from the mainland. Graffiti blossomed around the island, with "No More New More Dev elop- ment" a favorite. And John Bolton, chairman of the local government finance board, received a blank bullet in his mail with a note that said: "The next one will go through you. Halt genocide." The arson and the threats are blamed on Fo Halloo, Gaelic for Underground Movement. The organization in the first issue of a news sheet called Manx Free Press charged there is 'a treasonable conspiracy against the Manx people.'' It pledged to take "whatever measures we deem necessary."
