Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - April 14, 1973, Lethbridge, Alberta Saturday, April 14, 1973 THE MIRAW Russians like American jeans By VINCENT BU1ST MOSCOW (Reuter) Gen- uine American jeans are the hottest line now being peddled in the second-hand markets of Soviet cities despite police ac- tion to stamp out speculation. They sell for a standard black-market price of 100 rubles about a pair in the used clothing markets of cities like Odessa, Baku, Lvov, Moscow and Leningrad. This represents a profit of more than per cent which is split between the often a sailor, and the black market hawker. Ownership of a pair of Ameri- can jeans brings its own prob- among them a high risk of loss. A young Frenchman in Mos- cow who went to a city swim- ming pool dried off and went to retrieve h'is clothes, only to find his American jeans had dis- appeared. Fortunately, in their place, someone had left a pair of tattered Russian pants. Much the same misadventure befell a young Russian student who changed in his gymansium for a workout and also dis- covered that his jeans had ex- ercised an overwehlming at- traction for someone else. He had to wait until his mother came in a taxi with a spare pair of pants. Jeans are popular among youngsters through the East- ern bloc and the Polish state clothing indtou-y has tried to meet the demand by producing its own version. MUST BE GENUINE But only genuine American jeans will meet the standards of the Soviet marketplace. Bellbot- toms are preferred. If a lad in Moscow receives the wrong kind he is likely to spend the next 48 hours soaking his jeans in water, with stiff boards inside the bottom of the legs to try to achieve a modi- fied bellbottom effect. Almost anything foreign which is either of good qual- ity or a well. Men's patent leather shoes also fetch up to and there is a steady demand for Japa- nese wristwatches with large well as Western ties, nylon jackets and multi- colored shirts. NO POSTAL SERVICE During the French regime in Canada there was no postal service. H.
