They urge Christians to re- flect on Easter's meaning and bring its message of hope to the world. Rev. Agnew H. Johnston of Thunder Bay, Ont.. moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Canada, said the Christian church came into being through Christ's resurrection "and on that foundation the Christian faith stands." "The glad assurance of Eas- ter is that Jesus is alive, and that we live in a world where Jesus is our contemporary, with us at every turn of the earthly journey." Dr. R. Fred Bullen of Brant- ford. Ont., general secretary of the Baptist Federation of Canada, said: "Easter presents a basic truth to combat modern uncertainties CAN MEET JESUS "Jesus was not merely a fig- ure in history. We can meet Him in every experience to comfort, to help and to make life joyful." Rt. Rev. N. Bruce McLeod of Toronto, moderator of the United Church of Canada, said: VChristians at Easter declare the loving spirit which broke into view and power in Jesus of Nazareth, which was not got rid of by his death.... "For all appearances to the contrary we are not alone. We live in God's world." Archbishop Jean-Marie For- tier of Sherbrooke. Que., president of the Canadian Catholic Conference of Bishops, said: "The great message of Easter is the joy and hope for mankind expressed through the ressurection of Jesus Christ "Christians should take Easter as a time to reflect upon how they individually contribute to making our world a place in which people can learn to hope and live in respect for one another. "It's the Christian's greatest challenge to bring this message of hope to the world. It may be a message 2.000 years old but it is a message which is ever new to our world and one which is needed in our day." Most Rev. Edward W. Scott, Primate "of the Anglican Church of Canada, said early Christians in a world not too different from the present discovered grounds for faith, hope and love in the death and resurrection of Christ. "The resurrection came about not because of the wisdom arid power of the powerful love of God. I believe this process of death and resurrection is still a reality in our faith1, hope and love are pos- sible for I pray, for you also. Rev. J. M. Zimmerma'n. president of the Lutheran Council in Canada, said many Christians cannot accept the resurrection but it is the truth that proves God is the lord of life and that "death has not got the last word." Bank rale cut LONDON (AP) The Bank of England has cut its minimum lending rate by a quarter per cent to 12 per cent. It was the second such cut in as many weeks. The reductions by the state- run bank reflect the decision by the new Labor government to try to bring down lending rates generally. The idea is to ease credit and encourage industry to invest so that production losses can be made up from the recent three-day work week.
