The film, sketches Vincent's early life 'in Holland, but con- centrates on his most produc- tive years as an artist, particu- larly the years in Aries, from 1888 to 1890, when he worked at fever pitch, as one driven. A subject of derision in the town where he lived, he was an "incorrigible smoker" who "hardly ate a tiling, and drank too much." Looking at nature, he once wrote, his emo- tions "almost make me faint." Vincent lived to paint, and he painted incessantly. Yet he v.-roie detailed and copious let- ters to his brother Theo, in Paris, putting into words his philosophy of life ami art. It is from these letters that the documentary draws for its dial- ogue and voice-over commen- tary, spoken mainly by Mi- chael Gough as Van Gogh. The written words of the artist Gaughin, who visited Vincent at Aries, are also articulated in the film. In the summer of 1888, Vin- cent wrote to his brother Theo: "I'm painting just now with the Vincent the Dutchman Vincent the Dutchman, a film portrait of the post- impressionist pointer Vincent Van Gogh, will be telecast on CBC-TV, Wednesday, April 18, at 8 p.m. Van Gogh, who died in 1890 after many months in a mental institu- tion, was to become famous only after his death.
