Riley McCormick CENTRE VILLAGE MALL PHONE 328-5644 I "SOUTHERN ALBERTA'S LARGEST WESTERN WEAR HEADQUARTERS m Lee LONDON (CP) diplo- matic row is on the boil here following a series of reports British firms in South Af- rica are paying their non-white workers at levels well below the poverty line. The reports, which first ap- peared in The Guardian, have created an uproar in the busi- ness community with at least 10 companies promising imme- diate and substantial salary in- creases. A select Commons committee has been appointed to study the matter in detail. The articles, by Adam Raph- ael, discounted the companies' protestations that they" paid "the going South African rates" to their non-white workers. He concentrated on comparisons between the official pcnerly line and the incomes received by non-white laborers Raphael said he found that in many cases wages were far short of subsistence levels The issue became a diplo- matic incident after members of the Commons committee be gan suggesting that they might have to conduct part of their in- vestigation on the spot in South Africa. John Vorster, the South Afri- can prime minister, sent a pri- vate note to British Prime Min- ister Edward Heath which dis- approved of such a visit. The message came to light during a weekend visit here by the South African foreign minis- ter, Hilgard Muller. Mulier later met the British foreign secretary, Sir Alec Douglas- Home, to express his dis- pleasure at the proposed com- mittee visit. William Rodgers, a Tory MP who will head the committee, said the South African react'on "seems very arbitrary and very premature." He emphasized this is not a government inquiry but a parliamentary investiga- tion which is in no way con- cerned with the policies of the South African government. Meanwhile, the large multina- tional firm of Slater Walker Securities Ltd. has announced wage increases of 100 per cent to its non-white South African workers, along with a series of reforms including free milk to all children of employees, new schools and enlarged welfare services.
