The spectacle was there Tuesday, ranging from volup- tuous RaqufT Welch cork- screws in her hair to a languor- ous Jon VolgM. Mr. Voighl, the male stud of Midnight Cowboy, looked as if he were for the death scene in Camille. And glamor there was too, notably with the absolutely stunning Elizabeth Taylor, dia- monds and all. (Was that All McGraw or Zorro in the black Errol-Flynn But Ihe producers of the shov, can't "s c e m to amalgamate their immediate medium-tele- vision, and the industry being When the movies were con centra ted on, the show clicked Some ins I a n c c s were shots from openings of previous prcs e n t a t i o n s, clips from Carj Grant's movies End a shor look at The Sterile Cuckoo, uset as a background to a song. But generally, we didn't see enough of movies, or the performances, which had been nominated. Audiences who hsd not at tended shows for which best actor and bsst actress wen nominated, were out of luck The short clip of Z was the first thing anyone in Alberta has seen of it. In other words, the telecast is seen by nulliocs but the production plays to voting academy members. Bob Hope's dissertation this year was on dirty movies. Hone's remarks were about as suggestive arxl dirty as the mo- vies he was p'oking'fun at. Ciitf Koberfson gave a vole of thanks lo three individuals who could have been his aunt, uncle and lillle dog, as far as the TV audience was concern- r.lervicws with 10. promincpt directors were interesting, if you like public affairs sand- wicbed in between CUwHs Car- dinale and Myna And then there was thai chap it the' who twice gave the Inccricaji ratings of some adult acd restricted movies. Either the Maryland Board of Censors vas warning us elf, or the U.S. novie industry has hired Am- brose Holowach. There were good moments. Lou version of Jean was a nice, mellow rendition. Cary rant had some interesting things to say. And John Wayie's winning ol he best actor award, even if it came from a sentimental rate, was Hollywood recogniz- ing a man who has pleased nuny theatregoers over, the past 30 years. For sheer drama, there was Riclurd BurUia's stvjced.face as the best actor nominations were read off, and ElizabtOi Taylor's bitter look after her husbar.d lost out to Wayne. Perhaps the most dramatic iicnriebt, liuweyer, came with Barbara MrNair's bow. Dressed in a decolletage that plunged about as Pasa- dena, .Miss XIcNair had 230 mil- lion people wo.-dering if, she wasn't trying to get something off her chest. Like clothes. This column called eight ol the top 10 awards correctly this year. :The wrong predictions iiTere for Jack Nicholson to win the supporting actor award (Gig Young took it) and for Can- ada's Gencvicve liujold to win the best actress Oscar (taken by -Maggie Actually an 80 per cent average is much higher than my woeful lifetime average of -3. Kow if the Boston Bruins would please win the .Stanley Cup, Jeane Dixon is in trouble. As to the National Hockey eague -_ quarter-fin als, CJLH's coverage of the game Wednesday featured an item probably never before seen on an Alberta TV screen. The once-in-a-lifetimsr was part of a commercial for seat bells, everybody Jlolson's Beer. Beer commercials not allowed on television in Alberta. Since the game was out of the U.S., Ihe offending material sriuck in before Canadian com- mercials cculd be inserted. Maybe the CBC was taking revenge for the commotioa in past years over the Festival drama series. But it won't do them any good. We all know there's no booze in Alberta. TV Forsyte Saga, which open- ed its series lasl Sun- day on channel 7, turned out to be a soap opera with good stars, Victorian costumes acd a point of view. The saga, based on the novel by John Galsworthy, relates the story of a British family whose belief in the holiness of property colors then- every action. Starring Joseph 0'Conor, Ken- neth More Fay Complon, the slory follows the family during the last 30 years of the 1800s and the first couple of decades in the present cen- tury. It looks like the kind of story which will grow on viewers as they continue lo watch the week- ly episodes. And viewers will probably have to watch every episode In the first one, we were in troduced to about 20" members of the There are aboul 23 still lo come.
